Vol. 160: Storing inventory on the sales floor

Creating a stylish and functional retail environment

About a year ago, the HELM boot company decided to move its flagship store to a more desirable, but smaller, location on Austin’s east side.

“We knew we had to get creative with how we were going to store our inventory, while also creating the right environment,” said HELM founder Brad Day.

The shop now features a compact shelving system that’s as stylish and functional as the product it stores. The system is robust enough to store all the inventory required, while still complementing the store’s interior design and being easily accessible by clerks.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better solution in a small store,” Day said. “It provides what we need functionally, but also gives a look and feel and aesthetic that fits with HELM.”

Vol. 159: LEVPRO in a small police department

Improving organization and storing gear at the point of need

Officers at the police department in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, were storing their duty gear in an unused room. It was cluttered and unsightly, and the room was inconveniently located far from the garage entrance.

When the department grew to the point where the room needed to be used as an office, the police chief acquired a LEVPRO suspended shelving system.

The LEVPRO is located right outside the door that leads from the police department’s interior to the garage, so officers can easily pick up gear on their way to their cruisers and drop it off on their way back inside. The system keeps gear organized and accessible, right where it’s needed.

Vol. 158: Modernizing a legacy storage system

Spacesaver converts an aging electronic system to mechanical assist operation

An electronic compact mobile system was installed at the Missouri Botanical Gardens’ herbarium by a now-defunct Spacesaver competitor in the 1970s and 80s.

Faculty and staff recently wanted to convert the system to Spacesaver’s mechanical assist, but they had a number of requirements. For instance, in keeping with the Gardens’ commitment to sustainability, all discarded materials had to be recycled and the existing rails, carriages, and shelving were to be retained. And in order to minimize risk to the botanical collections, no specimens were to be moved unless absolutely necessary.

The local Spacesaver distributor worked with Spacesaver’s engineers and project managers to design and install a solution.

Vol. 157: Refrigerated Evidence Storage

Saving space and keeping evidence organized

The city of Tucson, Arizona, purchased a former distribution center and renovated it to create a state-of-the-art evidence storage facility.

Optimizing space was of concern throughout the building, and it was particularly crucial in the cold storage areas. Spacesaver provided mobile shelving systems for the facility’s refrigerator, which typically holds blood and urine samples from DUI cases, and in the freezer, which holds biological evidence from homicides and sexual assaults. The state of Arizona has no statute of limitations on these crimes, and evidence must be kept a minimum of 55 years.

Vol. 156: ADA-Compliant FreeStyle Lockers

Promoting accessibility in a police department’s locker room

Spacesaver’s ADA-compliant FreeStyle® Personal Storage Lockers provide the same convenience and configurability of other FreeStyle lockers, along with right-height locks and handles.

The police department in Carbondale, Illinois, installed ADA-compliant lockers to promote accessibility.

Vol. 155: Extra-Large Museum Trays

ETO trays and cabinet for storing bison hides

Spacesaver designed and manufactured this prototype cabinet with custom-fitted trays for a Western museum that needed to store bison hides. The cabinet measures 7’ tall by 8’ wide by 7’ deep, and the trays are designed with aluminum inserts to maintain strength while minimizing the cabinet’s overall weight.

Vol. 154: Glass Drawer Tops Create Visible Storage

Secure visible storage for libraries and museums

A Midwestern museum needed a secure, compact storage solution that would allow visitors to view artifacts of various sizes. Museum staff worked with their local Spacesaver representative and Spacesaver’s engineering team to create an engineered-to-order solution.

Using Spacesaver’s flat file museum cabinets as a starting point, the team designed a set of cabinets that feature:

* Fully extendable drawers
* Liftable glass covers
* Sturdy steel construction
* Locks for security

Vol. 153: Compacting Showroom Display

‘Transformative’ concept maximizes space in Manhattan showroomHäfele America Co., a distributor of upscale residential and commercial hardware, recently designed a new showroom in Manhattan to showcase its innovative fittings, slides, and other products.

The situation presented the design team with a challenge: the new space would be smaller than the previous showroom, yet the company’s product lines were expanding and more product would need to be displayed. In addition, the design team wanted every aspect of the showroom to reflect Häfele’s dedication to innovation and premium quality.

A Spacesaver compact storage system provided the ideal solution. It integrates perfectly with Häfele’s mission and philosophy, providing an impressive and innovative experience to showroom visitors.

“It’s always a ‘wow’ moment for our customers,” the client said.

Vol. 152: Growing hydroponic herbs in Manhattan

Spacesaver helps an urban farm gain 30% more space

A Manhattan entrepreneur has devised a creative way to supply urban chefs with premium ingredients: he has transformed a restaurant basement into a thriving hydroponic herb-growing business.

He worked with the Manhattan-based Spacesaver distributor to design an ActivRAC® Mobilized Storage System layout that would maximize the available space. “It gave us about 30 percent more space in the room, which is obviously a really big deal for us,” he said. “It’s a beautiful piece of engineering.”

His enterprise, called Farm.One, grows between 100 to 200 different varieties of high-value herbs and microgreens year-round.

Please note: ActivRAC is available in stainless steel, which is recommended for humid environments.

Vol. 151: Compact storage for an evidence warehouse

Spacesaver helps a growing city store long-term evidence

Because the Calgary Police Department needed a lot of evidence storage in a limited space, the planning team chose Spacesaver’s ActivRAC® Mobilized Storage System and XTend® Mobile High-Bay Storage System to store long-term evidence.

The new warehouse has a variety of space-saving features that improve organization and ensure a secure chain of custody:

* ActivRAC eliminates wasted aisle space by mounting pallet racking on a carriage-and-rail system. The rows of racking sit side-by-side until evidence warehouse staff open an aisle to store or retrieve evidence.

* Badge-swipe access provides an additional layer of security to specified aisles.

* The mobile  XTend system stores evidence that fits in standard-sized boxes. The system moves along rails and extends toward the ceiling to make the most efficient use of horizontal and vertical space.
