Vol. 140: HVAC integration

Architects sometimes want to specify ventilation systems that are more visually appealing than typical vents in floors, walls, or ceilings, or they might require a ventilation system that delivers heated or cooled air as evenly as possible over a large area.

That was the case at the downtown public library in Vancouver, Washington, where Spacesaver’s engineers modified cantilever shelving bases to serve as vents. The library’s air handlers are located on the roof and the system pushes air down through the walls and under the floors, which are raised to accommodate computer cables and other building systems. The warm or cool air is then forced up from under the floor and out of the shelving bases throughout the building.

This solution distributes air evenly throughout the library, creating a comfortable environment for patrons and staff.
