Vol. 236: Protecting and Storing Framed Art

Minimizing vibration and optimizing space

When this historical society received funding for a new collections care facility, one of the top priorities was to create a better storage solution for large paintings and other framed artwork. The staff wanted to store them in a way that would minimize vibration and eliminate the need to handle multiple pieces to access the one they wanted.

Spacesaver’s ceiling-supported art rack system was the obvious solution. But the new building was designed with a room full of high-density shelving directly above the framed art storage area. The ceiling wasn’t designed to bear the weight of both systems.
