Vol. 283: Flag Storage on a Shipboard Museum

Optimizing space aboard a decommissioned aircraft carrier

Spacesaver helps protect collections in museums of all shapes and sizes, even when they’re located in places that were never intended to be used as museums. The USS Yorktown, for example, was an aircraft carrier before being decommissioned by the US Navy fifty years ago. It’s now anchored at Patriot’s Point near Charleston, S.C., where it serves as a maritime museum.

Among the artifacts stored on board is a collection of flags that commemorate the ship and the times during which it sailed. Finding a way to organize and properly store the museum’s historic flags was a challenging task, especially given the oddly shaped spaces that were designated for museum storage onboard the vessel.   Help your clients learn more:

Vol. 282: Day Use Lockers in a Public Library

Securing personal belongings and protecting special collections

When a major urban library underwent a complete interior renovation, staff wanted to improve public access to the expanded special collections area while continuing to protect the rare and fragile objects in the collections.

They prohibited patrons from bringing food and other potentially damaging items into the special collections area, so they needed to provide secure temporary storage nearby. The design team chose Spacesaver’s sturdy steel locker frame encased in custom wooden doors and surrounds.   Help your clients learn more:

Vol. 281: Four-Tier Cannabis Grow

Intensive growing operation optimizes space and maximizes yields

When a cannabis cultivation firm acquired an 80-year-old building in Oregon and set out to convert it to a modern cannabis grow, the design team wanted to optimize space throughout the facility. Space in all the rooms was tight, with about 12 feet in width, 40 feet in length, and varying ceiling heights.

Spacesaver’s Oregon-based cannabis consultant designed a GROW mobile system that integrates perfectly with the firm’s unique approach to growing cannabis, which is an intensive cultivation style with high plant density. A local fabrication shop supplied steel inserts. Help your clients learn more:

Vol. 280: From Obsolete to State-of-the-Art

Updating electronics systems at a university library

A large Midwestern university installed Spacesaver powered mobile systems in its main library about 25 years ago. After years of reliable operation, the system’s electronics were nearing the end of their useful life.

Over the summer of 2020, local Spacesaver technicians updated the library’s aging electronics to a new state-of the-art system with a user-friendly interface. The technicians gained special clearance and followed strict safety protocols to work on campus during the COVID pandemic.

The investment resulted in a refreshed system with a new interface that’s more intuitive for students who are familiar with LCD touchscreen “swipe” technology. The system can also be controlled via an app on users’ mobile devices, which helps prevent the possibility of disease transmission on high-touch surfaces. Help your clients learn more:

Vol. 279: Viking 395 with Textile Drawers

Keeping large military flags organized and protected

Staff at a national military museum wanted to optimize space in their collections storage area while creating the best possible preservation environment for large flags.

They worked with their Washington D.C.-based Spacesaver consultant to use Viking 395 cabinets with textile drawers to protect the flags, as well as RaptorRAC Widespan Shelving on mobile systems to save space and expand their storage capacity.Help your clients learn more:

Vol. 278: Campus Warehouse Storage

Increase storage capacity without renting or building more space

Campus warehouses have always needed to store a variety of items, from bulk supplies to furniture and building materials. The COVID-19 crisis has intensified the space crunch. With health and safety top of mind, some campuses are considering renting portable storage containers or additional warehouse space to accommodate bulk storage for face masks and other preparedness equipment and supplies.

A more cost-effective long-term solution is the ActivRAC® Mobilized Storage System. By mounting new or existing racking on “carriages” that move along rails, the system stores more items in less space, or it frees up space to create additional work areas. It’s an infrastructure investment that quickly pays for itself in added storage capacity. See how a campus warehouse is using its ActivRAC system to store COVID-related supplies:

Vol. 277: Modular UTV Rack

Sturdy, stackable units save space in storage and during transport

Spacesaver’s Mobility Crate is a modular storage solution that provides secure and ready storage for utility terrain vehicles (UTV). Developed in collaboration with the U.S. military, this stackable, mission-ready system greatly reduces the square footage needed to store UTVs and other equipment.

The system is:

  • Collapsible for efficient shipping and storage
  • Dual-entry, with accessibility for functional tests during storage
  • Stackable up to 3 high
  • Galvanized for long-term interior or exterior use

Vol. 276: New Widespan GROW Supports

Integrate horticultural lighting, HVAC, and other accessories

Configurability and flexibility are essential in the indoor cannabis growing environment, and Spacesaver continues to refine and expand its GROW product offerings.

Our new front-to-back supports are multifunctional: they provide sturdy support for shelving and trays while also offering hanging points for lighting, ventilation, and other accessories. These hanging points were designed for Gavita lighting from Hawthorne Gardening Co., but they can be used with any horticultural accessory.

Vol. 275: Perforated Flat-File Cabinets

Storing fragile, chemically unstable documents

Staff at a county archive wanted to store chemically unstable documents in ventilated flat-file cabinets, but they couldn’t find what they were looking for.

Spacesaver’s engineering team designed a flat-file cabinet with perforations in the front and back of each drawer, as well as a perforated back panel. The design allows the cabinets to retain their structural integrity while promoting ventilation.

Vol. 274: Graphics and Tambour Doors

Improving readiness and boosting morale

Spacesaver’s high-density storage systems are well-known for saving space and improving organization. But they aren’t only for warehouses and storerooms!

Appealing graphics and security features allow your clients to store items in work rooms and other busy areas, right where they’re needed.

NOTE: Spacesaver does not provide graphic wrap design or application services. Sales reps need to work with their clients and their local graphics firm to coordinate the design and application of custom graphic wraps. If you don’t already have a relationship with a graphics firm, google “graphic wraps near me” to get started.
