Vol. 219: Modern shelving, timeless character

Wood-clad steel shelving in the Library of Congress

Library furnishings need to meet modern expectations, even when they’re located in historic buildings. That was the case in this reading room in the Jefferson Building at the Library of Congress.

Materials stored in the room are changed out frequently, so the librarians wanted the convenient adjustability of steel shelving. They also wanted the shelving to blend in with the room’s historic character, so they worked with their local Spacesaver consultant and with Spacesaver’s Joint Projects team to design a solution.

Vol. 218: Compact storage for a science lab

Optimizing space, protecting equipment, and keeping students safe

Space on campus is always in high demand, and every area that’s set aside for storage is space that could potentially be used for teaching, research, or other uses.

Yet storage actually plays a central role in the student experience: music departments need to store instruments and sheet music, for instance, and sports teams need space for equipment. Spacesaver helped this chemistry department consolidate fragile glassware and electronics, along with potentially hazardous chemicals, all in half the space the department had formerly been using.

Vol. 217: High-density armory storage

Saving space and improving efficiency on an Air Force base

Guards and other security forces at this U.S. Air Force base are issued weapons and communications gear at the beginning of every shift, and they turn it back in to the armory when their shift is over. Maintaining an efficient workflow is key because a lot of gear goes into and out of the armory several times a day, and every minute that airmen spend waiting for gear is a minute wasted.

Adding more square footage wasn’t an option, so the armorists called in the local Spacesaver consultant to optimize the available space. He worked with them to transform the room with a high-density storage system that would securely store weapons and improve efficiency while also freeing up valuable floor space for maintenance and repair work.

Vol. 216: Modernizing a university library

Integrating print materials with spaces for collaboration & quiet work University libraries typically occupy prime real estate in the heart of campus, so it’s important to ensure that they meet students’ needs. As educational materials move from print to online, libraries are changing to offer better connectivity and more space for modern uses. This Midwestern university recently gutted an entire three-story library and repurposed the space to provide amenities like connected classrooms, powerful computing labs, quiet study areas, and meeting rooms for collaboration.

Vol. 215: Day use lockers in Manhattan

Offering aesthetics, peace of mind, and optimized spaceThe design team for this activity-based workplace needed to create an appealing office environment while also optimizing expensive square footage in the heart of Manhattan.

The perimeter of the new office featured shared workspaces with large windows and views of Times Square and the surrounding area, and the corridors and work areas toward the building’s core also needed to be bright and welcoming.

Vol. 214: Integrating textile racks and art racks

Saving space and preserving rolled quilts, flags, and other textiles

In addition to cantilever textile racks, Spacesaver also manufactures pull-out textile racks that can be integrated with ceiling-supported or floor-supported art rack systems and lateral textile racks that can be integrated with floor-supported art racks. These solutions work well for museums and other institutions that have a relatively small number of rolled textiles but still want to create the best possible preservation conditions for them.

These compact systems allow museums to provide the best possible care for collections while also saving space.

Vol. 211: Preserving evidence of the Holocaust

Preserving evidence of the Holocaust
Compact shelving in cold storageThe Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. built an off-site facility to preserve its growing collections. The new facility included cold storage for photos, film, and other chemically reactive materials.

Maintaining temperature and humidity levels in cold storage is expensive, so the project designers wanted to store as many materials as possible in the smallest amount of space.

They worked with the local Spacesaver consultant to design compact storage systems to keep collections organized and accessible while also eliminating wasted space and improving energy efficiency.
