Vol. 235: New TUSC™ Control App

Helping a brewery save time and improve efficiency

This brewery uses Spacesaver’s new patent-pending technology to open and close aisles in their ActivRAC system, search for items, and view safety status via their iOS or Android phones and tablets.

The TUSC™ platform also allows technicians to use a separate app to run diagnostic tests on site.

“As we all know in the commercial space, it’s really hard to gain large amounts of time,” said the warehouse manager. “The important thing is getting small amounts: a minute here, a minute there, 30 seconds. Those things add up and in a year, all of a sudden you’re talking about hours that get saved.”

Vol. 234: Preserving Civil War History

Custom mounts and brackets reduce strain on historic saddles

Although saddles are designed to withstand years of rough wear and tear, they’re actually quite difficult for museums to preserve. Historic saddles were made from a combination of wood, leather, and other materials, which means they’re often heavy, awkward to handle, and vulnerable to damage and decay.

Staff at the Civil War museum pictured here wanted to optimize space in their climate-controlled collections storage area, and at the same time they wanted to properly support the saddles, straps, and stirrups in their collection.

Vol. 233: Retail Storage at a Sports Arena

Consolidating merchandise to simplify stocking and inventory control

Modern sports venues are often home to more than one team, which means that an arena might host a basketball game one night and a hockey game the next. That’s the case at the United Center in Chicago, which is home to the Bulls basketball team and the Blackhawks hockey team, and which hosts more than 80 games every season along with concerts and other events.

The teams’ devoted fans can purchase licensed merchandise anytime at the Madhouse Team Store, a 10,000-square-foot retail experience at the arena. They can also shop on game days at smaller kiosks located throughout the venue.

Keeping these retail vendors stocked with merchandise requires a lot of storage capacity: the Madhouse needs to be restocked daily and the kiosk clerks have to swap out merchandise for each event. For instance, the kiosks display about 70% Bulls merchandise on basketball game days, and only about 30% Blackhawks merchandise. The next day they need to quickly switch up the merchandise mix to offer more Blackhawks items for sale at the hockey game.

Vol. 232: High-Bay Evidence Storage

20-foot-tall system optimizes space and provides room to grow

Law enforcement agencies must store evidence related to homicides and other serious crimes for decades, usually until the perpetrator has fulfilled his or her sentence. As a result, evidence accumulates from year to year and many agencies are faced with overcrowded long-term evidence storage areas.

In an effort to solve this problem, a growing number of police departments and sheriffs’ offices are building off-site warehouses for long-term evidence storage. Warehouses keep evidence organized and secure while being located on less expensive real estate on the outskirts of town. Moving evidence off-site also frees up valuable space back at headquarters for locker rooms, training areas, and other uses.

Vol. 229: Corporate Art Storage

Preserving collections and optimizing space in a downtown highrise

Banks and other businesses collect fine art for a variety of reasons: some collect and display art to inspire employees to think creatively. Others purchase art to support emerging artists and enhance the firm’s public image. Many firms allow executives to select works for display in their offices as a prestigious perk.

These works of art are typically rotated among various corporate locations and are kept in storage when not on display. This can create storage challenges because the firms often occupy expensive real estate, yet they need museum-quality storage equipment to protect their investment in fine art.

Vol. 227: Serving Student Athletes

Storing gear for multiple sports at a new multi-million-dollar fieldhouse

This prestigious university lacked adequate space to store gear for its 500+ student athletes. Teams were storing athletic equipment in various areas around campus with only one small, central location for sports storage. As a result, student athletes had to spend a lot of time moving between locations to work out, go to practice, grab a meal, and attend tutoring sessions.

When the university began considering concepts for a new fieldhouse, the planning team decided that a top priority would be to support all student athletes in a new and more complete way. They wanted athletes to be able to spend more time training and studying, and less time in transit from place to place for various activities — and that meant pulling all the teams together under one roof.

Vol. 226: Increased Capacity and Convenience

Sleek lockers optimize space and eliminate lost keys

Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain is a Nordic-style spa that emulates the experience of a hot springs. By providing a unique hydrotherapy experience, the spa combines age-old thermal tradition with cutting-edge facilities, contemporary design, and natural integrations.

The spa had two outdated change rooms with key-operated lockers. When the keys frequently went missing, the spa would lose access to the lockers. This diminished the spa’s capacity to serve guests, which in turn resulted in decreased revenue.

Management reached out to the Toronto-based Spacesaver distributorship in search of a better solution.

Vol. 225: A better workflow

Improving efficiency with thoughtful locker design and placement

The Arlington Heights Police Department in Arlington Heights, Illinois, had been housed in a cramped, outdated building for years. When the time finally came to begin planning and constructing a new facility, one of the design team’s main goals was to improve comfort and efficiency for officers and staff. That’s why they started the design process by thinking about workflows that would save time and promote efficiency.

One major improvement was locating the duty bag lockers between the briefing room and the garage, so officers could pick up their gear on the way to their patrol cars. Spacesaver duty bag lockers were placed on an extra-tall integrated base that elevated the lowest lockers off the floor and brought the upper edge into alignment with the adjacent long gun lockers.

Vol. 224: Custom FreeStyle Benches

Like many cities and towns across the Midwest, a city north of Chicago had to cut down thousands of ash trees due to infestation by an insect called the emerald ash borer. Although this was a tragedy in many ways, the public works department had the foresight to keep the trunks of many of the larger trees in hopes that something positive might come out of the situation.

When the time came to plan and construct a new police facility, the planning team knew they wanted the new building to help build strong, positive connections with the community. They designed a large room for community meetings and other gatherings, and they realized that the lumber from the ash trees could be reclaimed and used in a variety of ways. The lumber was used for unique paneling and tables in the community room and elsewhere in the building.
