Vol. 362: Space: The Next Frontier

Putting Items Up, Up, & Away

Even if it’s going to be a long, long time ‘til touchdown brings them back around to find their gear, proper storage makes a world of difference for today’s rocket men and women. This fact was not lost in space for curators at the National Air and Space Museum, but opportunity was being lost in their space.

White Spacesaver two door lockers installed in a locker room

The cabinets used to store their spacesuits only extended to fill 84” of the nearly 115” of vertical space between the floor and the lighting, leaving an unexplored frontier for a willing adventurer. Spacesaver’s local rep, Matt Potocko of Spacesaver Interiors, was up for the challenge.

Working with the talented team at mission control in Fort Atkison, he was able to land a solution that would perfectly fit the museum’s needs and the air up there above the 84” cabinets. The end result was 40 engineered-to-order (ETO) 30” ‘mini’ cabinets, designed to allow for dedicated venting and secure storage of helmets and other accessories.

Vol. 361: Sam Centre Saddles

Preserving Seats for the Rodeo

Bust out your boots, this Halloween Trailblazer is all about what our local rep up north did for The Calgary Stampede’s Sam Centre – who was looking for a hazer to steer preservation of its storied history. Coming strong out the chute, Allan Hansen and the team at Heritage Business Interiors (HBI) were able to rope themselves a unique project with their best-in-class reputation.

See how HBI – in conjunction with our in-house designers – was able to deliver the first saddle storage systems mounted on 4-Post Shelving that are tough enough to handle the tools of the roughest riders, preserving them for visitors to experience for years to come.

Vol. 360: Vivo Rec Center

Keeping Steps On The Treadmill

While it may seem a bit ironic, the ability to take the fewest steps from the locker room to the training space is a valuable option for those looking to get a good workout in. This concept was a main driver for the Vivo Rec Center’s desire to install a bank of lockers within the center of its floorspace, allowing it to provide a closer option for patrons to get in, get ready, and get their wellness activity going.

Having seen Spacesaver’s Day Use Lockers in an awareness campaign executed by Heritage Business Interiors (HBI) – Spacesaver’s representative in Calgary, Alberta – the project’s architect knew they wanted to include this versatile solution in the Center’s update. Knowing the solutions would need to fit both the footprint and aesthetic of the space, HBI’s Allan Hansen worked with the Center’s team to maximize locker openings while adhering to the look and feel of the space.

Vol. 359: Supporting Works of Artifacts

Optimized to Categorize and Digitize

Never knowing exactly what condition or size the historical artifacts they receive will be in, the Pritzker Military Archives Center (PMAC) must be ready to process all types of donations. From weapons to wall art, these items represent the storied past of those who serve or support those who serve our nation and are provided for the PMAC to preserve and display them for generations to come.

Needing a customized solution for assessing and processing donations within their armory and digitization room, administrators at the PMAC reached out to Bradford Systems – their local Spacesaver distributor – for support. Having supported them through a move to a new facility, Mike Dawson of Bradford knew exactly what to include in the engineered-to-order worktables that would fit the specific functions of the facility’s staff.

Vol. 358: Functional Storage for Advancing Healthcare

Our Mission Is To Support Yours

Advancement in any field requires focused dedication from those seeking change. Even the slightest of distractions or smallest of procedural hiccups can result in a delay in progress or termination of an experiment. For those looking to make a positive impact in the healthcare industry, these consequences are markedly heightened.

Looking to build a facility dedicated to furthering the progress of marvels in modern medicine, the University of California – San Francisco and its team of designers and architects needed help in outfitting storage within its newly constructed space in Mission Bay. Housing a variety of specialists working to advance treatment of a myriad of ailments, the facility needed point-of-use storage solutions to minimize lost time and items and maximize security and impact.

Vol. 357: Installing Pilot Lockers With Flying Colors

Spacesaver: Your Storage Wingman

The right storage solutions can certainly pave the highway to what some would consider a dangerous zone. From flight suits to helmets and oxygen masks to night vision goggles, there’s a lot to store and care for in a fighter pilot’s locker. Knowing this, those in command at Eglin Air Force Base called in their local Spacesaver representative, Jane Glass-Waldron from Patterson Pope, to provide ground support for their high-flyers.

The innovative pilot lockers Jane and her team delivered were the perfect combination of durability, technology, and aesthetics. These customized FreeStyle® Lockers feature not one, not two, but three compartments for storing flight helmets in a secure location, as well as charging ports for flight gear and personal belongings. And, not to be confused with the neighboring squadron’s lockers that are stored within the same room, this bank employs the wing’s distinctive red color.

Vol. 365: Good Things Happen When You Tri

We’ve said it once before, we’ll say several times again – museums traditionally only display about 3% of their collections at any given time. A stunning fact that always leads to the question of how to efficiently and effectively store the other 97%.

For the Glenbow Museum in Calgary – who was in the midst of planning for a more than $120 million renovation – this question loomed even larger as the renovation did not plan to expand the footprint of their art storage space. Knowing they needed to find a way to maximize capacity for supporting their growing collections, they reached out to Allan Hansen, their local Spacesaver representative at Heritage Business Interiors.

After assessing the storage space and gaining an understanding of the museum’s desired layout, Allan (with support from our Major Projects team) compiled a solution that included Wall-Mounted Art Racks and Tri-File Art Racks. Mounted on overhead supported tracks, the Tri-File Art Racks allow for an additional row of storage than the initially proposed Bi-File Art Racks; truly maximizing the available space.

Vol. 355: The End Is Just The Beginning

A Five-Star Athletic Solution

For many student athletes and the programs they represent, the objective is to make it to the next level – eventually rising to the professional ranks. While that requires years of hard work that is ultimately displayed on the playing field, it’s facilitated by recognition and supported by the equipment and solutions found in the storage room.

Wanting to deliver not only the most advanced systems for their staff and students but also a way to promote school pride and athlete progression, administrators at Gainesville High School in Georgia reached out to their local Spacesaver representative, Bob Tyler of Patterson Pope. Preceded by their reputation to deliver proven systems for local colleges and professional sports teams, Bob and his team showed the school how easy and impactful adding custom graphics to their High-Density Mobile Storage systems could be.

With these systems in place, the high school’s perspective staff and students and occasional visitors get a vibrant reminder of the caliber of program they are experiencing.

Vol. 354: Rolling With The Changes

Material Maintenance On The Move

A major role of the public library system is to deliver access and opportunity to its members. This requires librarians and administrators to create considerable space for existing resources and future technological advancements. One way these individuals can achieve this goal, is by partnering with an experienced storage provider who can offer the systems and expertise required to deliver lasting value.

A satisfied customer due to the proven Spacesaver storage solutions in several of its other county libraries, administrators in Pima County, Arizona made sure to reach out to their local Spacesaver representative when looking for a partner to outfit its newly constructed library in Sahuarita.

Knowing there was a heightened demand for visibility for patrons and adaptability for staff to conduct maintenance operations, their local Spacesaver representative – Jackie Rohn of Interior Solutions – equipped the space with Flexible Shelving. With these low-profile, high-capacity shelving units in place, librarians could not only offer in-demand resources within eyesight and reach of their patrons, but also could easily relocate the collections fully intact when it came time to replace carpet or carry out other routine maintenance tasks.

The project utilized an Arizona state contract, which was instrumental in helping the library secure the units. Upon installation and use, the library is finding not only that maintenance is much easier, but also that they can provide a higher degree of flexibility in programming space for the day’s needs and patrons’ demands.

Vol. 353: Overwhelming Results in Underutilized Space

Displaying How Safe Visible Storage Can Be

Having the support and acknowledgment of your community can be an extremely powerful thing for an organization, especially one geared toward sharing the items that represent the history of said community. However – as the Vermont Historical Society realized – with a larger amount of visitors, comes a greater risk for damage and theft. Wanting to still provide visibility for its patrons while at the same time ensuring security for the priceless artifacts in its collection, they reached out to their local Spacesaver representative at Donnegan Systems, Glenn Underwood.

shelving

The result was a combination of drawers, shelves, art racks, and a whole lot of locking glass, all designed to keep collections in sight and theft and damage never to be seen again. Repurposing an underutilized storage space that was best described as a catch-all closet, Glenn and his team turned the space into a must-see attraction for patrons of all ages. Now, visitors can get an up-close-and-personal perspective of each displayed item, and never the two shall touch.
