Vol. 183: Textiles at a university art gallery

Saving space and preserving quilts, needlework, and other textiles

Faculty and staff at the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, wanted to create the best possible preservation environment for the gallery’s textile collection. Because the collection includes pieces of various sizes, from small needlework panels to large quilts, they needed a variety of collections care equipment to ensure that items would be preserved in optimal conditions.

Vol. 182: Extra-wide compact storage

Promoting organization, security, and easy access for odd-sized items

Members of this Utah Air National Guard unit needed to create a better storage solution for their gear, which included ladders, bins, duty bags, and toolboxes of various sizes. They needed a system that could:

  • Accommodate large and bulky items
  • Stay organized to facilitate gear retrieval, replacement, and inventory
  • Be reconfigured as gear was acquired and retired
  • Be locked down to prevent “borrowing”
  • Optimize space in an under-utilized area in the warehouse

Vol. 181: Improving efficiency in a design studio

Space-saving solutions for a major auto manufacturer

When engineers, interior designers, and other design professionals are working on a design challenge, they need convenient access to materials so they can evaluate and compare potential solutions.

This major automobile manufacturer’s design studio needed storage for a variety of items, from leathers and fabrics to prototypes of doors and dashboards. Space consultants at the Los Angeles-based Spacesaver distributorship worked with the firm’s engineers and designers, along with Spacesaver’s engineering team, to create custom storage solutions that save space, promote efficiency, and encourage the creative process.

Vol. 180: Carts in a College Library

Combining form and function in adaptable spaces
Faculty and staff wanted to create adaptable and aesthetically pleasing spaces on the main floor of this new college library, so they opted for Spacesaver’s A-Frame carts and cantilever carts. The shelving units have the appearance of stationary shelving combined with the flexibility of wheeled carts.

Key questions to ask your library prospects:

  • What is your collection development plan for print media? Do you intend to house these materials in your library or off-site?
    • The answer will help you propose the appropriate storage equipment.
  • What kind of student services and activities are you trying to create space for?
    • The answer might open up opportunities for additional sales.
  • Do you have Special Collections? What kinds of materials are in your Special Collections?
    • Key end-user concern here will be balancing preservation and access.

Vol. 179: Tambour Doors for Athletic Gear

Organizing and securing multiple sports in a high school addition

This high school athletics department needed a better way to store gear for multiple sports, so coaches and team managers jumped at the chance to re-think their storage soon after an addition was built onto the existing high school.
Security was one of their top priorities. Although theft at the school generally wasn’t a problem, they knew from experience that items could sometimes “disappear” when someone urgently needed an item that was in short supply in their team’s storage area. As a result of those experiences, the coaches and managers wanted separate locking sections for each sport so they would always know exactly what their teams had on hand.

Vol. 178: A Complete Collections Care Solution

Spacesaver helps a county museum improve its preservation environment

A county museum in suburban Chicago had been storing its collections in retrofitted agricultural buildings. When the museum had the opportunity to move to a renovated office building in a nearby city, staff made the most of their chance to design a collections area that would protect the collections for generations to come, while also optimizing the space.

Spacesaver provided everything the museum needed:

Vol. 177: Evidence Storage in a Sheriff’s Department

Securing the chain of custody and attaining accreditation

When Lake County (Illinois) gave its Sheriff’s Department a large area in a new building for evidence storage, the evidence manager called on the local Spacesaver consultant to help analyze the department’s storage needs and explain their options. Together they came up with a plan to secure the chain of custody throughout the facility.
In part because of new evidence storage equipment and processes, the department earned accreditation from the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program soon after move-in.

Vol. 175: ActivRAC in a beer distributorship

Improving safety and organization while providing access to 2400 SKUs

Managers of cold storage facilities all face the same challenge: they want to store the most stock in the least amount of space, but they also need to maintain safe and convenient access to every item. That was the case at a large beer distributorship in Chicago, where the owners had been dissatisfied with their cooler storage situation for years.
The distributorship improved customer service and created a safer and more efficient work environment by installing an ActivRAC® Mobilized Storage System.

The system resulted in better selectivity, fewer write-offs, and a safer workflow. “We gained a lot more than we had imagined,” said the head operations manager. “We feel like we can do anything now that we’ve got the barrel cooler straight. It’s a major savings.”

Vol. 174: Rails in Raised Floors

Saving space and enabling connected workplaces

Libraries, offices, and other “wired” environments often install raised floors to conceal ethernet cables and other hardware, while still providing easy access for maintenance and repair.
For more than 20 years, Spacesaver has been integrating rail systems with raised flooring, resulting in solutions that save space in connected workplaces.

This solution applies to moving walls, high-density storage systems, mobile islands, and other Spacesaver rail-based applications.
