Vol. 248: Aluminum Trays on Widespan

Preserving historic flags and other textiles

A recent move to a new preservation facility gave staff at this museum the opportunity to improve preservation conditions for their extensive flag collections while also optimizing space and planning for the future. Custom aluminum trays mounted on Spacesaver’s RaptorRAC™ Widespan Shelving provide safe storage for delicate textiles. To provide room for future growth, rails were installed into the floor during construction.

NOTE TO SALES REPS: Aluminum trays are available in 2.25” height only. The front and rear tray ends have an integrated “lip” that serves as a handle.
To order these trays, draw the appropriately sized RaptorRAC in Configura and submit an ETO request for aluminum trays and mounting brackets to fit.

Vol. 246: Custom Graphic Wraps

Transforming storage into a point of pride

High-density storage is a great way to store more items in less space, and storage doesn’t have to be purely utilitarian. Custom graphic wraps can help reinforce branding and enhance the appearance of useful storage spaces at schools, universities, businesses, and other institutions.

NOTE: Spacesaver does not provide graphic wrap design or application services. Sales reps need to work with their clients and their local graphics firm to coordinate the design and application of custom graphic wraps. If you don’t already have a relationship with a graphics firm, google “graphic wraps near me” to get started.

Vol. 245: Flexible Spaces at a University

Moving partitions provide collaborative space, storage, and display

As universities renovate to meet modern demands, design teams are looking for creative ways to make the best use of available space. Spacesaver’s movable partitions create flexible rooms that can host collaborative work sessions, display student work, and provide secure storage for students’ personal belongings. The partitions can even slide together to make room for guest speakers and other events.

Vol. 244: Improving maintenance efficiency

High-density shelving, bins, and hanger rods optimize space

This maintenance shop serves a large, multi-building campus of a major pharmaceutical company. In addition to standard maintenance tools and supplies, the shop also stores pumps, gauges, and other highly specialized equipment for the firm’s research laboratories.

Due to rapid growth in the research labs, the maintenance supply and storage area was becoming overcrowded and difficult to use. Management called in the local Spacesaver consultant to work with staff and completely re-think the shop’s storage systems.

Vol. 243: Dust seals in high-density storage

Preventing dust accumulation in labs, museums, and other spaces

Maintaining a dust-free storage environment is crucial at laboratories, hospitals, museums, and other institutions that store delicate objects and materials. Removing dust can be almost as harmful as letting it accumulate, so the best way to prevent damage is to keep dust away from objects in the first place.

To minimize the risk of dust accumulation, Spacesaver offers flexible gaskets that seal the gaps between mobile shelving units when the aisles are closed.

SALES NOTE: The standard 1” dust seal can be picklisted under the part name DUST SEAL. The 2” seal and/or non-off-gassing seals must be ordered as an ETO.

Vol. 242: Pull-Out Browsing Bins

Efficient, browsable bins save space and increase engagement

Although many library collections are going digital, patrons still like to browse books and audio recordings. Spine-out storage isn’t ideal for some types of these materials because patrons generally like to see the covers of children’s books, CDs, and other items when making their selections. Browsing bins are the obvious choice, and pull-out bins save space by allowing more bins to be stacked in the same vertical space.

Vol. 241: Ventilated Evidence ‘Cabinets’

Securing the chain of custody and protecting personnel from fumes

Storing drug evidence is a challenge for many police departments. Drug evidence is valuable, so it requires an additional layer of security, and it also needs to be properly ventilated to protect personnel from potentially harmful fumes. Some police departments solve these problems by building separate rooms within their evidence storage areas.

To provide additional security and ventilation for drug evidence without the expense of adding a room, these Midwestern police departments worked with their Spacesaver consultant to design locking “cabinets” that connect to ventilation ducts. The cabinets consist of Spacesaver 4-Post shelving fitted with locking frame-mounted doors, a duct fitting, and waterfall decking on the shelves.

Vol. 240: Bridging the digital divide

A library modernizes to help community members connect

The primary goal of the Philadelphia Free Library’s recent renovation was to help bridge the city’s “digital divide,” the growing gap between residents who have convenient, affordable internet access and those who don’t.

Moving books from a restricted stacks area and creating new spaces with wifi access, meeting areas, and other resources has created more opportunities for the city’s residents.
