Vol. 241: Ventilated Evidence ‘Cabinets’

Securing the chain of custody and protecting personnel from fumes

Storing drug evidence is a challenge for many police departments. Drug evidence is valuable, so it requires an additional layer of security, and it also needs to be properly ventilated to protect personnel from potentially harmful fumes. Some police departments solve these problems by building separate rooms within their evidence storage areas.

To provide additional security and ventilation for drug evidence without the expense of adding a room, these Midwestern police departments worked with their Spacesaver consultant to design locking “cabinets” that connect to ventilation ducts. The cabinets consist of Spacesaver 4-Post shelving fitted with locking frame-mounted doors, a duct fitting, and waterfall decking on the shelves.

Vol. 240: Bridging the digital divide

A library modernizes to help community members connect

The primary goal of the Philadelphia Free Library’s recent renovation was to help bridge the city’s “digital divide,” the growing gap between residents who have convenient, affordable internet access and those who don’t.

Moving books from a restricted stacks area and creating new spaces with wifi access, meeting areas, and other resources has created more opportunities for the city’s residents.

Vol. 238: Storing swords and scabbards

Protecting Civil War artifacts

Spacesaver provided a number of creative collections care solutions for the American Civil War Museum. For example, the swords and scabbards in the museum’s collection vary in size and shape, and staff wanted to store them compactly while still keeping them organized. Staff also needed a way to shift swords and scabbards to accommodate new acquisitions in the future.
