Vol. 226: Increased Capacity and Convenience

Sleek lockers optimize space and eliminate lost keys

Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain is a Nordic-style spa that emulates the experience of a hot springs. By providing a unique hydrotherapy experience, the spa combines age-old thermal tradition with cutting-edge facilities, contemporary design, and natural integrations.

The spa had two outdated change rooms with key-operated lockers. When the keys frequently went missing, the spa would lose access to the lockers. This diminished the spa’s capacity to serve guests, which in turn resulted in decreased revenue.

Management reached out to the Toronto-based Spacesaver distributorship in search of a better solution.

Vol. 225: A better workflow

Improving efficiency with thoughtful locker design and placement

The Arlington Heights Police Department in Arlington Heights, Illinois, had been housed in a cramped, outdated building for years. When the time finally came to begin planning and constructing a new facility, one of the design team’s main goals was to improve comfort and efficiency for officers and staff. That’s why they started the design process by thinking about workflows that would save time and promote efficiency.

One major improvement was locating the duty bag lockers between the briefing room and the garage, so officers could pick up their gear on the way to their patrol cars. Spacesaver duty bag lockers were placed on an extra-tall integrated base that elevated the lowest lockers off the floor and brought the upper edge into alignment with the adjacent long gun lockers.

Vol. 224: Custom FreeStyle Benches

Like many cities and towns across the Midwest, a city north of Chicago had to cut down thousands of ash trees due to infestation by an insect called the emerald ash borer. Although this was a tragedy in many ways, the public works department had the foresight to keep the trunks of many of the larger trees in hopes that something positive might come out of the situation.

When the time came to plan and construct a new police facility, the planning team knew they wanted the new building to help build strong, positive connections with the community. They designed a large room for community meetings and other gatherings, and they realized that the lumber from the ash trees could be reclaimed and used in a variety of ways. The lumber was used for unique paneling and tables in the community room and elsewhere in the building.
