Vol. 190: Special Collections in a High-Bay Facility

Maintaining optimal preservation environments for a variety of materials

University libraries often serve as repositories for ever-growing archives and art collections, but at the same time they need to provide space for collaboration and technology.

Moving special collections and archives to climate-controlled offsite facilities is a smart way to provide optimal preservation conditions while also freeing up space on campus for modern uses. For instance, faculty and staff at Texas State University at San Marcos worked with Spacesaver to design systems that would organize and preserve not only books and journals, but also framed paintings, three-dimensional art, and archival materials.

Vol. 188: Ventilated 4-Post ‘Cabinets’ for Science Labs

Keeping a university’s chemical supplies organized and secure

Colleges and universities need to store a variety of chemicals for use in lab classes and faculty research. Because such chemicals can be hazardous, they must be kept secure to prevent unauthorized access and they need to be stored in a well-ventilated location to prevent the accumulation of fumes.

This Midwestern university had been storing chemicals in a locked storeroom, but the room was becoming overcrowded. Faculty and staff asked the local Spacesaver consultant to design a new storage solution that would increase storage capacity, promote ventilation and security, and allow them to see items in storage.

Vol. 187: Mobile cutting table with drawers

Promoting organization and collaboration at a car design studio

When most people think about car design, they think about a vehicle’s exterior. But the interior must be thoughtfully designed, too, and prototyping helps designers choose fabrics and trim that are functional and comfortable while also reflecting a car’s overall look and feel.

A major automobile manufacturer’s design studio needed a large cutting table with  drawers to keep cutters, measuring devices, and other tools organized and easily accessible. They also wanted to be able to move the table around to accommodate large or unwieldy prototypes or groups of people collaborating on a project.

Vol. 186: 4-Post trays in a library’s archive

Cost-effective storage for odd-sized special collections

Many college and university libraries serve as repositories for their institutions’ archives and special collections. Items of historical interest can include architectural plans, works of art, and rare books.

Faculty and staff at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois, worked with their architect and their local Spacesaver consultant to design a secure area in the college’s new library to house archives and special collections. While the bulk of archival paper storage was housed on compact mobile shelving, the college also needed to store odd-sized items including plaques, dinnerware, and other objects associated with the institution’s history.
